What is transloading?

Transloading is the movement of a shipment of goods from one form of transportation to another. For example, from railcar to truck. Transloading to or from railcars requires the use of terminals that may be specific to a certain type of good, such as a hazardous waste transloading terminal.

There are four primary categories of freight that are transloaded - Dry Bulk, Liquid Bulk, Dimensional, and Containers.

Dry bulk transloading is the transference of large quantities of loose, unpackaged materials from one form of transportation to another (e.g. rail to truck). A good example of frequently transloaded dry bulk material is an aggregate, such as gravel and sand used for construction.

Liquid bulk transloading is the transference of large quantities of unpackaged liquid cargo from one form of transportation to another (e.g. rail to truck). Liquid bulk cargo is broken into the following categories: hazardous, non-hazardous, edible, and non-edible. A good example of frequently transloaded liquid bulk materials would be chemicals, both hazardous and non-hazarous.This may include environmentally hazardous products, flammables, oxidizers, toxics, corrosives, combustible liquids, or TIH/PIH railcars.

Transloader fees are generally based on a per railcar basis for the type of material that is being transloaded. Cost will be based on the number and complexity of transloading services being performed.

The most common type of transload service is port to warehouse. Upon arrival, the goods are repackaged for transport to their final destination via truck.

There are three different modes of transportation that utilize transloading services: rail shipping, naval shipping, and trucking.

Intermodal is the movement of goods from one form of transportation to another, but during the process the goods stay in the same container. Transloading is the action of moving goods from one mode of transportation to another by switching the vessel in which the goods are being contained.

Cross-docking is the movement of intact pallets of goods from one form of transportation to another. Transloading is the movement of goods from one form of transportation to another, but typically involves the re-packaging or re-palletizing of the goods.

Whenever goods in transit are shifted from one form of transportation to another and the shift involves re-packaging/re-sorting of the goods, that qualifies as transloading. Shipping companies often require transload services from external transloading companies to move their cargo from one location to another.

Transloading services are required when goods need to be moved from one mode of transportation to another: rail to truck, truck to rail, sea port to rail, or rail to sea port. Specifically, if a supply point is over 250 miles from the destination and the customer is within 250 miles of the destination, then transloading is worth considering. For example, if a chemical manufacturer's facility is in the Houston ship channel area, the shipper could rail from TX to Seattle, transload at a terminal within a few working days, and then offer same-day tanker truck delivery of the liquid product to customers in the Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver areas on a cost-effective basis. It's important to note that 250 miles is generally the threshold for whether or not transloading makes sense, since that is the distance a long-haul trucker can safely travel in one-day.
